My Students
My students are funny, kind and challenging learners. They come from many diverse backgrounds and cultures. All of my students read far below grade level. Many come from book barren homes. My students come to me with little motivation to read. They have been given less challenging, boring books for years. When able to make connections, my students can create amazing art. They have stories worth sharing. Literature helps them to find their voice as a writer. They are survivors.
My Project
This book takes place in the Dominican Republic in 1960. The main character's family has mostly immigrated to the United States but she remains in the Dominican Republic. Her father is working secretly against the government. Even though this book takes place in the past, I plan on relating it to modern context through news articles and current videos. Students will reflect and make connections throughout reading.
I have an audio version of this book, which provides reading comprehension strategies throughout the book.
The version makes the book engaging and helps to build reading skills. The book has a very human element, which also engages students.
Class sets are important to this class in order to have meaningful discussions and learn to appropriately engage in conversations that are currently impacting our country. We appreciate any support you might offer.
