Empathy, Empowerment, and Education through Literature

My Students

My students are a great group of students who work so hard to succeed. My students come from a wide variety of different backgrounds and early childhood experiences.

Our school is a Title I school with a large number of students who speak English as their second language.

Our school has Universal Breakfast, so that each child can start the day with a healthy breakfast. My students are hard workers, who work together to make a difference in the classroom and in the community.

My Project

Creating a kind, caring, and gentle learning environment by forming relationships and creating rigorous and relevant lessons is vitally important. Using quality literature to teach empathy is an effective way to touch the hearts of children.

The books in this project tell the struggles and triumphs of children, adults, and families from different ethnic groups, developmental abilities, family situations, and parts of the world.

Children will quickly fall in love with these characters and their stories. A focus will be on appreciating the individuality of each character and empathizing with their trials. Children will reflect, journal, and discuss their feelings and opinions. Using these quality books, as mentor text and silent reading text, will keep empathy as a focus in our classroom.

Using these books, we will work together to create a kinder, gentler classroom and school environment.
