My Project

I will have a group of 24 second graders this year. They say that you learn everything you need to know in Kindergarten. Unfortunately for my students, their kindergarten year was in the midst of COVID-19 when masking and socially distancing were mandatory. They also had a first year teacher who was overwhelmed with teaching in the middle of a pandemic. Students missed out on a lot of learning, especially in the areas of Social and Emotional. In the Anchorage School District we have Social and Emotional Learning Standards. The standards fall into four categories, including Self Awareness, Self Management, Social Awareness and Social Management. The group of second graders that will be in my room have deficits in many of these areas. Students struggle with understanding and managing their emotions, making good decisions, reading social cues, interacting positively with their peers, and dealing with conflicts constructively. When students struggle with social and emotional skills it takes away from their academic learning as well. With the books on the bookshelf, puzzles, games, and other resources in my project, I plan on teaching daily SEL lessons, and infusing SEL skills and strategies into my other academic lessons. Also, these materials will help provide a print rich environment in my classroom that will enable my students to become better readers, writers, and thinkers.
