My Students
My students are hard-working, inquisitive, and want to succeed.
Our middle school is unique because it brings together students of all different cultures, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds, resulting in a high level of diversity within a single classroom.
They report feeling safe and supported at this school and in this community. Students are enthusiastic about their schoolwork and the many opportunities that they encounter in this middle school.
I have a variety of students within my five classes, especially considering backgrounds (30% Hispanic, 30% Caucasian, 20% African American, 20% Asian) and reading levels (measuring from second grade proficiency all the way to college-level) and need texts to support each of them. The intention of this project (as one that engages both visual learners and a variety of identities) is to bring together as many of these audiences as possible.
My Project
Students, especially those in middle school, need texts that showcase a wide variety of cultural experiences to captivate them and prove what effective literature can do. The two texts bought through this project will be divided up within a classroom, allowing students to choose which book best fits their interests and discuss alongside other teenagers the literary elements they can identify within their pages.
The Poet X and Long Way Down are pieces of art drawn using rich, descriptive free verse; students cannot put these books down and yearn to read more after finishing these stories.
Starting off the year with these texts will immediately invite students to an 8th grade journey full of vulnerable, detailed writing and prove our recognition of diverse, introspective perspectives in the classroom.
