Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

One of my favorite parts of teaching is helping kids identify how they are feeling and helping them through those big feelings. We do this through stories and intentional strategies before big feelings arise. I help students understand it's okay to feel in a world where many kids of all races are taught to toughen up. Emotional intelligence is important for all races. That's why this project is a social justice mission.

This emotional wellness area of my classroom allows kids to take a break from challenging situations or feelings to regain their personal control of their minds and bodies.

It allows them the opportunity to use the feelings wheel to correctly name what they're feeling beyond basic sad, mad, and happy. Then advocate for what they need.

Sometimes students need this space because of a peer-to-peer conflict, sometimes it is an internal battle with challenging work, and other times it may be challenging situations outside of school. No matter what issue students face, their able to come, set a timer, and regain control of their reactions. Our calm-down corner includes posters, snacks, stickers, stress balls, and other fidgets.

Every year, I have a few students who tell themselves they can't do something. This inhibits their academic and social growth. When they are taught to acknowledge their feelings, they learn they are bigger than their feelings, and they can do hard things with support. It's my greatest gift as an educator to be there to guide kids in this journey. Thank you for your support in our classroom.
