This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are some of the most hardworking students at our school. All of my students are special education students.
They are students with Autism, Learning Disabilities, ADHD, Language Disabilities or Other Health Impairments.
These disabilities make learning more difficult for them. In addition, over 65% of my students are English Language Learners, many of these students are still learning how to speak English. Our school has the highest Hispanic population in the state. Our school also qualifies as a Title I School: over 85% of our students live in poverty and receive free/reduced-priced lunch. Despite all of these obstacles, these students are eager to come to school each day. They always try their best and never give up when they face hardships. The students at this school are really special, and their enthusiasm and willingness to learn make teaching them such a joy.
My Project
Being at a Title 1 school, a high percentage of students at our school experience many different hardships that they don’t quite know how to handle at their age. We have students that have been physically, sexually, and emotionally abused. We have students who have had family members die from drug and gun violence. We have one of the highest Hispanic populations in the state. And unfortunately, we have had students whose parents have been deported. We have students living at the local Children's Shelter and foster homes in our city. The feelings of loss and fear of the unknown future are a lot to handle for a child.
These books will help show them appropriate ways to handle their emotions and that it is okay to feel what they are feeling.
I want my kids to know that they are not alone and that other people have dealt with the same traumas and emotions they have. These books will help my students to understand the what, why, and how of their behavior so we can work toward change.
