This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In a school environment where the classroom feels like home, it is important to consider different strategies students need to regulate their emotions. Mental health begins in the early years, and providing students with a space that is safe, secure, and supportive of each individual's needs is essential.

This project aims to support the neurodiverse community of students by teaching them how to cope in stressful situations.

Anxiety can make a child feel afraid, insecure, and can diminish their trust in themselves and others. We can teach students valuable skills, such as deep breathing, to help them manage these feelings. This technique allows them to stay calm and consider alternative responses as they grow.

Incorporating "Breathing Pals" into a calm-down corner will assist students in learning the process of deep breathing and the benefits of counting down to manage their emotions. During their early years, students are still developing the ability to express and differentiate their feelings. The "Emotions Coin Drop" can help both verbal and non-verbal students identify different emotions and engage in expressive conversations about the various attributes that emotions have in our everyday lives.

Recognizing that students need sensory input when they experience strong feelings, using a pop-it fidget can help them focus on one item at a time while learning to regulate their bodily responses. It is essential to emphasize that our students’ mental health is our top priority in the school environment.
