My Project

It's time to revamp my calm down/ SEL corner for the upcoming school year. After COVID, students were hooked on fidgets and hand held objects to keep them calm and relaxed when introduced to a high anxiety stimulation. This year, student's taught me that they have evolved from that. While I troubled to connect with my students during high emotional outbreaks, I had one interaction that just clicked. While a student was very angry and had a blockage of communication because of the emotional regulation, I suggested one idea that changed the SEL climate in my room ever since. "With these materials, I want you to build yourself a place that will make you feel calm and happy, when you're done, tell me about it." Not only did it immediately calm my student, it allowed this student to then be able to articulate exactly what they were feeling at that time and how they are ready to conquer the rest of the day. It was beautiful! It works for students of various ages.
