Emotion Explorers: Building Empathy, Awareness and Resiliency in Kindergarten

My Project
Kindergarten is the first time many young learners enter a formal school setting with a classroom full of other children and new social expectations. Children come into the classroom with varying abilities in identifying their feelings and determining effective coping strategies, especially when interacting with their peers. For some students, this will be their first interactions with people different from them and their family. My role as a classroom teacher is to best support the development of my kindergarten students, both academically and socially as little humans in preparation for a diverse democratic society.
Funding my project will provide high quality books that will facilitate critical conversations around naming feelings, identifying coping strategies and social issues, while connecting them our broader role as global citizens.
Because read-alouds are one of my students favorite part of our day, I plan to create engaging lessons around each book that will provide my students with language to be able to communicate their feelings and needs, while supporting developing appropriate coping strategies. Beyond caring for themselves, these books will help me teach my students about the beautiful diversity of our world and how our differences make us stronger as a classroom community, as some books focus on social issues that impact our lives daily.
These resources will support my students learning skills like empathy, self and social awareness, inclusivity and resiliency that will provide a foundation for academic achievement in formal school setting, as they will be expected to self-regulate. The skills that my students will develop will extend beyond their first year of school and support them as they matriculate through elementary, middle and high school and beyond.
