Our school is a therapeutic day school program. The task, of which, is to provide emotional support and academic opportunities to children who have been unable to succeed in community school settings due to emotional, learning, and behavioral difficulties. The majority of our students live at a residential children's home and are wards of the state.
Our school runs as a trauma-informed program, aiming to help our students grow from their pasts and learn how to cope in effective ways.
Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredible children. Their resiliency, love for learning, and curiosity are truly inspiring. I strive to make my classroom a welcoming and safe community and to help my students explore learning and grow into independent and productive citizens.
My Project
My students love to create. They absolutely adore art class and any lesson that involves creation!
We are requesting sets of relatable clip-art so my students can create social emotional materials for us to use in our own classrooms, as well as lesson plans, so we can learn how to create op art!
Over the summer, my students do not have fine arts classes, but we don't want that to stop us. My students will become graphic designers by using our new clip art sets to create their own social stories and behavior visuals. The clip art sets depict children in special education settings who are from diverse backgrounds and age appropriate.
My students are also fascinated by op art, or drawing optical illusions. The lesson bundle we are requesting would walk students through each step of creating op art, which is so helpful as I am not an art teacher!
I would love to create special art time daily so we can meet the interests and needs of my students even during our summer school session. Thank you!
