Emergent Readers in Need of Leveled Books

My students need a collection of leveled books (and a library bookshelf to hold those books) to build strong independent literacy skills and to promote a love of reading.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. B.'s classroom raised $937

This project is fully funded

My Students

Twenty-seven four year olds are on a mission to "work hard so [their] brains grow HUGE!" In order to fulfill their class motto, these twenty-seven students need more exposure to print and literature.

I have a classroom of 27 four year old kindergarten students in a low income school.

Some of my students are starting to break into independent reading and could not be more excited! They are dedicated to working hard because they are on a mission to "grow their brains."

My Project

The resources I am requesting are critical to my students development as emergent readers. Students will be able to practice reading sight words at a more fluent rate which will improve their reading in later years. In addition, the Leveled Reading Books A-C will give my students the practice they need to phonetically decode words. The more books my students are exposed to, the more likely they are to build these emergent literacy skills. The big books requested will help promote other aspects of literacy development such as concepts of print (reading left to right, top to bottom, parts of books, etc). In addition, the big books will expose the students to higher quality literature than the books that are currently available for our use. Lastly, I am requesting the library so the books are readily available for student use. This way, during centers or indoor recess, the students have the option to go to the library center and read.

We have a limited number of leveled books in our classroom.

These books are important for my students' development as readers as it will help build skills for independent reading. By practicing reading sight word books, in addition to emergent literacy texts, my students will increase their fluency and comprehension. These skills will set my students up for success in reading in later years. Lastly, independent reading will foster a sense of pride and will nurture a love of reading.
