This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember learning to read for the first time? My 6th grade emergent ELL readers need iPads to help them develop phonetically and become independent readers. This technology will be used as an alternative form of assessment that will inform instruction.
My 6th grade English language learners come from all over the world and speak different languages.
Most of them speak very little to no English in a general education classroom setting. The school that they attend is located in the poorest congressional district in the United States. We do not have a bilingual education program at our school. Therefore, classroom teachers must provide a variety of ways to teach their students to speak, read, and write in English.
My Project
ELLs routinely participate in standardized assessments that are designed for native language speakers. Oftentimes these students cannot accurately demonstrate their mastery of a topic without yet having mastery of the English language. With the iPads and a mastery learning approach, students can create dynamic and entertaining multimedia presentations that can be used as alternative assessments that inform instruction. There are many apps such as Phonics Easy Reader and BugBrained Phonics Awareness for iPads that will be used to help students develop their English language skills.
The iPads will provide the multimedia support for content that ELLs need and also allows ELLs to demonstrate mastery of a topic, regardless of their English proficiency.
Good reading skills, especially in a phonics reading program, improves spelling. As students learn to sound out letters and words, reading comes easier.
