My Students

I work with eighteen wonderful students and counting! The demographics of our school, based on NCES, show that we have an average of 500+ students each year. Our male to female student numbers are almost even, with 288 male students in the 16-17 school year, opposed to 228 female students in that same school year. Our schools reflect our community, and Laurel is a mostly black community, with a large number of Hispanic people, followed by the number of white people. The school I work in is a Title 1 school.

My students are brilliant and deserve all the support the world, and I want to give that to them.

Many of them come from poor families who work several jobs just to survive. Many have incarcerated parents. Many are foster children who were taken from various situations. Many are homeless, living in shelters. I want to make my classroom a place where they know everything they need will always be there, and they do not have to worry about anything, so they can focus on learning and growing. I have purchased several things for my classroom, but my budget no longer permits for that.

My Project

Many students struggle to come to school in the proper uniform, or some emergency happens and they need a change of clothes. Our school has a washer and dryer on site, but we do not have a large selection of emergency uniform options. I would like to have a couple of sets of each for my students to wear in case of emergencies while we wash and dry their uniforms. Students also may have emergencies and not have access to the proper hygiene supplies. I would like to keep some in my room for them.

Students who are not worried with their clothes or if they brushed their hair or teeth will be more comfortable in school and better prepared to learn.
