Emergency Preparedness and Safety With Blackout Curtains
Help me give my students easy-to-install Blackout EZ Classroom Door Lockdown Shades for each classroom door in our building, to help keep them safe in an emergency situation.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, our scholars have had various school experiences over the last three years: fully in-person learning, hybrid learning, fully virtual learning, or some combination of all three. They have met challenges with resilience, flexibility, and grace, and though my group of third graders have never experienced a 'non-COVID' school year, they are so excited to move up to upper elementary in what they lovingly call the “big kids' hall.”
Our classroom is beautifully diverse, and our classroom environment and lessons are designed to celebrate the uniqueness of every scholar in our class.
This is true of every one of the classes in our building, from Young 5's through 8th grade and including specials teachers (Gym, Tech, Art, Socio-Emotional Learning, Music), resource room teachers, and all service providers (occupational therapy, speech therapy, etc).
In order to ensure the safety of every one of our 600+ scholars, and to ensure that we are prepared in case of an unforeseen emergency, we are required to run several types of drills every year. This includes fire drills, evacuation drills ('reunification drills'), tornado drills, room clear drills (if, for example, a student is having a medical emergency) and yes, lockdown drills. While we hope that it is a skill scholars never need to use, they must practice what to do if there is an emergency requiring a lockdown.
An essential part of the lockdown procedure is that scholars are hidden and silent, and that nobody can see into the classrooms. This maximizes safety. For this reason, we'd like to place Blackout EZ Classroom Door Lockdown Shades on every classroom door in our building. These are easy to install with Velcro-style strips and will prevent anyone from being able to see into the classroom in the event of an emergency requiring lockdown.
