Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

About My Students

Artissha is a dedicated and active young lady who is interested in the field of emergency services. She is an advocate for young children and is very concerned about their safety and well-being, particularly in the face of crisis and emergency.

For her capstone project in English class, Artissha has been researching emergency services as a career. She has become very concerned about the knowledge and preparation children have in regard to emergencies and natural disasters. She would like to create an emergency kit to pass out to these students for their own preparedness as part of her presentation.

This project will help my student Artissha to develop research skills, planning and organizing skills, public speaking and presenting skills as she reviews what is typically taught and demonstrated in a child-centered emergency preparation presentation, plans and organizes her presentation and activities and coordinates with community members, and holds her presentation. She is also learning social emotional skills like empathy and persistence as she works with children and community members to make her idea a reality.

In Their Own Words

I plan to create a small presentation showing young students how they can best prepare for natural disasters that can happen. During the elementary presentation I will pass out safety kits and explain how each item can help during and after a disaster. I will also be doing hands-on activities.

I plan on holding a presentation on natural disaster preparedness. My academy coach has made arrangements with an elementary school teacher for me to work with her children. I will teach what should be done in the case of unplanned disasters. During this presentation I will be showing what goes in a safety bag for emergency and I will be passing out roughly 30 kits.

Recently there have been many natural disasters across the world that have harmed people, including children. I’m doing this because it’s very important to me that children be prepared. This topic is very dear to me. This would be a good pay-it-forward experience where children across the whole nation can be learn to be prepared. I feel not enough people are educated on natural disasters especially in urban areas because we tend to think that natural disasters don't happen there. All the people who aren’t aware will have great difficulty surviving a natural disaster rather than being prepared. I would love for everyone to be able to know what to do and how to handle natural disasters.
