Emergency Backpacks in Our Classrooms!

Help me give my students emergency backpacks in every classroom of our school, as well as in the public spaces of our school (cafeteria, playground, library, etc.). The case of 24 backpacks are the biggest cost of this.

My Students

Many of the students at my school come from households with hardships. They live in one-parent homes, foster homes, and extreme poverty. There are several students who have parents in prison. There are many students who have adults in their life that do not value education; this in turn results in high absenteeism. They rarely have the kid’s complete homework or sign their agenda nightly; much less read with them the recommended twenty minutes per day.

The majority of our kids struggle to have their basic needs met.

Many of our students come to school wearing clothes that are dirty, too small, not appropriate for the weather, etc. They have shoes with holes in them. Our school is the only thing that is constant and reliable for these kids. They know that every day at our school they will receive hot meals. They will be loved. They will be valued.

My Project

We live in Tornado Alley. Every spring, we deal with potentially dangerous weather situations. A fire could occur at any time. We never know when we will be faced with an emergency situation. These backpacks will be placed in every classroom and public space of our school.

Teachers will have emergency items within arms reach if needed.

We will also take these backpacks with us on all field trips. We will keep emergency contacts, medical history (medications, allergies, etc.) of our students in case we are ever in an actual emergency, and not specifically located in our classroom (outside, bus, field trip).
