My students need 2 I-Pads with cases as it will provide accessibility to communication, assistance in transitioning throughout the classroom, social stories and other opportunities.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Children with disabilities will benefit by embracing the world beyond the walls of the classroom. Technology captures their attention and allows them to grasp education at a whole new level regardless of their disability.
My classroom has 2-4 typically developing students and approximately 12 students who are 3 to 5 years old with various disabilities.
Some are Developmentally Delayed, others have Autism, some may have Cerebral Palsy, or Down Syndrome just to name a few. As they arrive each day, they come in are expected to put their belongings away and wish their parents well and greet one another. They continue by "signing" their names and work on their assigned activity.
Usually, they come in with a smile and ready to enjoy their day. It is amazing to see how these little ones face each day regardless or their challenges. Most of them are from low income households. Our school is a high poverty Title 1 school, where many students are receiving free or reduced lunch. It is amazing to see how these children manage to come in with a big smile and make our world brighter. They definitely deserve our compassion and understanding.
My Project
Students with limited to no communication, benefit from the use of an I-Pad. Many of my students have Autism which is a disability that affects many areas of development such as communication, and social skills. Through the applications on the I-Pad the possibilities are endless. Some of the applications will allow us to set up individual schedules that will provide a sense of security for the students by allowing them to know what comes next, and social stories which will allow a better understanding on what to do and what to expect at a doctors office. This is just a glance of what the I-Pad can offer our students. There are other educational applications that will benefit them. One application for instance will allow the children to trace the letter of the alphabet. There is another that teaches them about math skills such as quantity of numbers in a set , sides of shapes , filling in the missing number and so forth.
The reason why it is so important to use technology in our educational environment is because technology captures the students attention and allows them to enter the world beyond the walls of a classroom and allows them to embrace what the world has to offer regardless of their ability level.
It also allows them to grasp the joy of learning at a whole new level. With your generosity and support these children will be able to experience their world as never before
