My Students

My students are incredibly bright and eager to learn! Since starting 3rd grade in the fall, they have grown so much and are excited to keep learning to go home. Since we have moved to at-home learning, my students and their families are looking for more engagement opportunities.

My students are based in Philadelphia, PA, and have shown they have such a strong desire to learn more and more.

In school, they take great pride in their work and look for challenges to keep their brains growing. We do have so many different levels in our classroom. I have an ESL friendly classroom, so our reading ranges from PreK to fifth grade.

My Project

All the books chosen in the list below help affirm and reflect students’ identities and to help facilitate important conversations about equity, racism, and belonging. Starting to talk about race and equity at a young age is critical to creating awareness and lasting change. With everything going on in the world today , I had chosen these books as some of the most effective and practical tools for initiating these conversations in my grade level. These books all promote positive racial identity development in youth.

I have so many cultures in my classroom, that we want to celebrate.

Reading these books , labeling them with stickers, and discussing them, will help my students see themselves and their family life. It will also help my students understand that every culture and race is important.

I am teaching English Language Learner summer school and these will help with my online classroom. I want to provide my students with the opportunity to see themselves in stories and on book covers. I want them to know that their lives are interesting enough for someone to write about. I want those mirrors and windows to reflect all of our students! My hope is that these books will be used for many years to come and continue to inspire our young readers! Thank you for taking the time to read this.
