Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students enrolled in this middle school are bright, eager, and curious scholars with a desire for learning. Most of these students will be first-generation college students: they know and understand that education is the key to success.
Though these students live in a poverty-stricken community, their lives are filled with a wealth of resiliency, persistence, and determination.
These students deserve to have a library that is a safe, inviting, comfortable space where they can come to read, work independently, or in groups.
My Project
This project contains 25 books that feature characters and stories of people who have a wide array of physical and cognitive abilities. These stories will enrich students' perspectives into the world of people who are differently-abled and who, as a result, often struggle for self and social acceptance and understanding in the world.
The books contain engaging, high-interest, contemporary stories that feature middle school characters with a wide array of diagnoses such as blindness, deafness, paralysis, diabetes, autism, anxiety, and many other different and unique abilities that can sometimes get in the way of being a "normal" teenager.
The stories are compelling and will enable our students to not only connect with the characters but also to learn more about some of these issues they or someone they know might be facing. These books will help students feel like if they are not alone in their journeys to being accepted and loved just as they are!
