ELLs on Laptops - Cross-Grade Collaboration & Communication

My Students

Speaking and comprehending English are skills our English Language Learners (ELLs) pick up quickly, however reading and especially writing are the greater challenge. From Kindergarten on through 8th grade, our kids struggle with writing.

Our school is an Innovation School that has embraced the STEM movement and Project Based Learning.

Project Based Learning enables all our students from mostly low-income homes, with a combined language skill-set of 49 languages, to acquire content meaningfully, and in a way that is accessible to them. PBL gives them the opportunity to engage in a topic in a way that plays to their strengths, while still tasking them to explore it in ways that are challenging to them. For our ELLs in particular, that challenge is writing.

My Project

These new computers will combine two of our students' favorite activities, computers and talking, in an effort to naturally improve their writing. Using cloud-based programs like GoogleDocs, Prezi, StoryBoardThat, and Weebly, together with online-chat programs like KidBlog and Hangouts our ELLs will collaborate across grade-levels while developing their PBL contributions. Ms. Miller's younger students and Ms. Egan's older students will engage with each other in "kind critique" sessions where they share their progress and invite encouraging feedback for their project. Using the online software via the laptops expands their computer knowledge, enhances their collaboration skills, and most importantly, engages their writing skills in a meaningful way.

Writing is typically a loathsome task to our ELLs.

However the promise of editing ones work on the computer, as well as interacting and collaborating with your peers on the Internet is highly enticing to the students and a great motivator. It is this incentive to use the laptops that we hope to take advantage of to help guide our students' writing towards mastery.
