My Students
The students in my class are predominately ESL readers in a brand new classroom. We have an extremely limited number of books and very few that are of appropriate interest and language for third graders still learning the English language. We need more high interest texts in our classroom.
My students are all incredibly motivated by humorous texts.
Most of them live in quite a sheltered home in this close knit community. They continue to need practice to make inferences. Realistic stories help students to analyze character's actions and then apply those analyses to real life situations. My students need to be able to see a connection and humorous texts that are high interest are quite motivational.
The new standards require students to think deeply and the texts I've chosen are appropriate for the students at different levels in my class. The texts are incredibly high interest and will give my students more options in our library.
Currently at times, they need to read a text below their level because there are few books available on their level. These new books will increase the number of books at an appropriate level to keep the students exposure to new vocabulary consistent.
My Project
The texts by Roald Dahl are well known worldwide. He is incredibly vivid with his imagery and has well developed characters that are multifaceted. I've selected other texts with similarities to Roald Dahl's texts that have a variety of characters that endure a variety of challenges and adventures. There are several sets of books that are targeted specifically towards boys interests or girls interests.
Students have to be motivated to read for them to truly be invested in the time they spend reading and reap the benefits.
At times, it is just time passed with a book. I want my students to have access to these wonderful texts. I have seen many students fall in love with reading when they find texts they truly connect to. Being that my class is filled with students who are relatively new to reading in English, it is critical that they have that motivation early on in their reading career.
