This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being in a classroom where you're excited to learn but you first have to learn a new language. Each semester I get students from a variety of countries speaking different languages. My goal is to get them acclimated to their new country and their new language so that they can be successful.

I understand my students first hand as I was an English Language Learner myself in elementary school.

Throughout my eight years of teaching, I've had students coming from over a dozen different countries; each one with their own unique need. I enjoy each day as I teach them English through reading, writing, debating, and presentations. I have seen my students grow from newcomers to promising young citizens of our country.

My Project

This conference strand will be for both middle level and high school teachers who teach English Language Learners (ELLs) in a designated second language classroom, sheltered classroom or in any content area classroom. The "Write Path English Language Learners Teacher Guide", provided to us, will focus on the use of writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading (WICR). We will be learning scaffolding, academic English skills through multiple modalities, modeling, bridging, schema building, meta‐cognitive development and contextualization. All skills that are essential to any ELL students.

The AVID conference is chance for me to learn more techniques to help prepare my English Language Learner students for the real world.

At the conference, they will be providing us with new teaching skills and materials that I can use and share with fellow teachers in the building to ensure that my students are successful in all of their classes.
