My Students
I teach social studies at one of the most academically rigorous middle schools in the city of Chicago with students who come to school inspired to learn everyday. My student population is highly diverse making classroom exchange rich and meaningful for all involved in the learning process. Furthermore, learning in my classroom is more than just key terms and important dates; my class exposes some of the most pressing issues facing the world using pertinent data to help convey a story that words can't always explain in a way that is accessible to all students.
Exposure to a more integrated population helps my students gain an appreciation for various perspectives on a multitude of issues building a sense of civic responsibility and understanding of relevant global issues.
My Project
As a new teacher, I have noticed one of the most pressing issues facing public school's across the country is minimal access to technology. Most teachers are still making thousands of copies a year when the majority of the materials we use can be facilitated over the web. Rather than peering over a student's shoulder every few minutes to ensure thoughtfulness and accuracy, I could manage each individuals work seamlessly from my computer if they were all completing assignments on a Chromebook. This would largely eliminate the need to decipher poor handwriting and would allow me to more effectively deliver quick, meaningful feedback on a daily basis. It would also eliminate paper waste, time wasted making copies, student's loosing papers, and excuses for missing homework assignments (among a list of MANY other things).
Moreover, in a world that is only becoming more technologically integrated, student's need more access to technology in school to ultimately prepare them for college and the professional ranks.
I currently use Google Classroom to post class materials so that my students have access to curriculum they missed or need to review. However, I would like to take advantage of the full spectrum of features Google Classroom offers by posting daily class work and homework assignments through the app.
Funding for this project will provide my students with 8 Chromebooks to ensure my students have all of the technological skills to thrive in any workplace/academic institution.
