This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have lived through and have had experiences that most of us didn’t even consider when we were in middle school and, for some of us, not even when we were in high school. A full 100% of the student population receives free lunch, and we have an English Language Learner and Special Education population that is in full inclusion with all other students.

Very often as kids, we could not wait to be grown-ups.

This has not changed through the decades, but the “grow-up” process has advanced. This is why it is remarkable to see excitement and laughter when their walls come down and they become students enjoying learning as opposed to worrying about their image and falling into “dogma” (we just reviewed that word today).

At the end of the day, my goal as an educator is to provide my students with everything they CAN have, not just what is provided to them or what fits in the budget. Why is it that students who are economically challenged encounter the most hurdles? My goal is to expand their horizons and show them what there is beyond the few blocks of their worlds.

My Project

This year we have been focusing on flex seating for the classroom and making the classroom a more comfortable environment. While we are in the midst of transformation, our little class library needs comfort.

How can kids get into reading if they have no where comfortable read?

Because of this I am looking for your help as we add a carpet and some pillows to our reading area. We currently have a small 3' x 5' carpet in the classroom and I am always amazed by how many students fit on it. This 6' round carpet will be the perfect addition to our reading corner, along with the pillows, ottoman, etc.
