This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the art teacher for a elementary in Dallas, Texas. I teach grades k-6 (900+ students). I am wanting my 150 6th graders to learn the history of the ancient Egyptians and focus on the art from that era. I thought I would have the students do research in the library on Egyptian artifacts (focusing especially on the golden artifacts) and have the students discover why gold was symbolic in Egyptian art, then each student would choose an Egyptian symbol, add to or change something about the piece. They will then sketch out some ideas for a new design, transfer their image onto the metal foil using the embossing tools, manipulate the material to give it a relief effect and giving their piece a sense of authenticity.
I feel it would be a great experience for the students to use gold or copper metal foil and learn the process of embossing. I know the funding of this project would be a great opportunity for the students to be successful, from learning the history of Egyptian art and culture, choosing and redesigning an Egyptian symbol, learning how to emboss using wooden tools and the completion of an original work of art.
