Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students need to hear about college and careers everyday! Even though they are in elementary school, now is the time to prepare them for the academic rigor needed in college and the skills needed to be successful in their chosen careers.
My second grade students attend a Title 1 school in a low socioeconomic area.
They come from hardworking families that value education for the children. Few of the parents have attended college but that doesn't mean they don't want their children to go to college and have successful careers.
For many of my students, the first and only time they hear and learn about colleges and careers is in the classroom. When they are taught a higher level vocabulary word or math skill, they are encourage to use it throughout the week. They love thinking they are doing college work!
My Project
In order to be successful, these college-bound students need to receive academic rigor. That means lots of vocabulary practice and refining of language arts and math skills and strategies. The math and language arts strategies CD's will allow students to have continuous practice with needed skills. Their vocabulary will improve as they continue to practice using a dictionary. These activities will allow students to work independently and in small groups while using higher level thinking skills.
We can't wait until high school to begin talking to students about careers and college.
My second grade students are exposed to higher level vocabulary, critical thinking skills, and logical reasoning problems daily. With these test taking strategy CD's and journals, students will have daily access to skills that will one day be used in college. Help these young minds get on the college-bound track with materials that encourage higher level thinking. Today's youth are tomorrow's leaders.
