Elementary Nature Detectives

My Students

My students are ready to return to hands-on, outdoor learning when school opens back up to in-person learning.

Right now, they are working on computers provided through the district with as much help as their parents can provide, but it is tough. Soon though, we will be back in the classroom exploring and learning through project-based lessons.

Most of these inner-city students have lost someone they know from Covid 19, so they persevere without complaining that they want to go back into the classroom. They smile, laugh, and want to learn even when their lives have many challenges.

When we were in the classroom, many saw school as their stable and safe environment. Now that their parents have chosen virtual, the students are working through it in spite of many challenges at home.

My Project

Do you remember the first time you watched Goonies or read Treasure Island? I do, and I remember how much I wanted to go hunt for lost treasure. I would love to create a treasure hunt for my students while we explore outside.

To bring environmental science hands-on to my students, we will conduct an outdoor treasure hunt entailing nature journaling, map reading, and using a metal detector.

As Nature Detectives, groups will use walkie talkies to communicate as they observe the flora and fauna of the area we are visiting. As a culmination to the treasure hunt, the final spot will be a hidden cache of pirate coins that will require map reading and a metal detector to find for each group.
