Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year my colleagues and I decided to start a mariachi music program. Mariachi is a type of music genre from Mexico. We want to teach our students the heritage of Mexico through music and teach them the fundamentals and techniques of theory and playing.
We originally decided to accept 32 committed 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to learn violin, guitar, and trumpet, but after we held an informative assembly about our program, we had over 50 applications.
We accepted all of them!
Between four mariachi instructors, we have taken on this role of music instructors. We have enough instruments for all our students, but we need the resources to sustain our program.
My Project
This year, our elementary school is starting our first mariachi music program. Students in 4th and 5th grade receive orchestra and band during the school day. My colleagues and I wanted to bring the Mexican culture to our students by providing them with the opportunity to play mariachi music.
Originally we decided to accept 32 students to play violins and guitars to start our program.
Since then, we have accepted over 50 students, after an overwhelming amount of interested students.
We are using school instruments, but need to maintain them by replacing broken strings and provided the proper supplies for playing correctly. The items we are requesting are guitar and violin strings. Rosin for the violin bows. Guitar straps for the guitars and guitar picks.
Any donation is greatly appreciated. We are so excited to start this program and teach these students the fundamentals of music and music theory.
