Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What if all students knew how to budget and how to save more than they spend? What if they truly had the skills to be smart with their money? And what if they began learning these skills in elementary school?

My students are first graders attending a school located in a low socioeconomic area in Los Angeles.

There are 12 boys and 11 girls between the ages of 6 and 7. My students are full of energy and are eager to learn new concepts every day. Even though a lot of times, because of economic hardship, their parents have two jobs to be able to support their family. Lacking time to spend with them and educate them on vital concepts like financial literacy. From everyday skills such as balancing a checkbook to long-term planning for retirement.

My Project

While literacy, the ability to read and write, is a fundamental part of our education, financial literacy is often left out in many classrooms. In our classroom financial literacy will begin with simple money concepts such as counting coins and making change for purchases. Then we will learn about savings accounts, balancing a check book and creating a personal budget. All this will be possible with the iPod touch donated. Learning how to manage their money will help them set limits, and learn how to spend within them, so that they can get the most out of their money. My students will learn this concepts with guidance and support of various interactive tools on the Internet. These interactive videos will help teach my students about the value of spending and saving money. In italladdsup students learn the value of money and its responsible management. Major purchases like cars and college tuition.

By teaching my students about money, I will help them discover the relationships between earning, spending and saving.

In doing this, my students will also begin to understand the value of money. It doesn't matter how young you are, learning how to save and manage your money is vitally important. By starting good financial practices in first grade, my students are more likely to maintain these good habits in their adulthood.
