Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Being a Title One school, most of my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Even though they are often dealing with difficult situations at home, they come to school excited to learn and profoundly interested in technology. Our school is a center in our community in Harlem, NYC. I see students from Kindergarten through Sixth grade. This means my students, on a given day, are as young as five and as old as 13! They all share an interest in technology and computers. It's through that interest that I push them to learn more about the world around them, whether it's through coding, using social media, or telling digital stories to share their interests.
My Project
It seemed to me at a very young age that creating something from raw and found materials was the most fun a child could have. Often as a teacher, I've tried to harness that idea into projects that are inspiring to my students. Building bridges and other structural objects create an incredible amount of energy and excitement in my lab. There are so many "aha" moments when a structure grows up from the ground, and so many gigantic smiles even when things come tumbling down. The Cricut Maker would allow students to modify their designs, create structural pieces on a digital device and then improve their designs. The device can cut foam, cardboard and much more. The engineering process is at the root of STEM education and a great way to interest young scientists in physics and the environment.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
