Help me give my students activities to do other than play on their electronics.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Koch's classroom raised $550

My Students
Our 5th graders are fortunate enough to still have recess. Many schools do not allow time in the schedule for recess - thankfully ours does! Watching my students run and play is really relaxing! Unfortunately, many do not run and play.
A NON DEVICE recess is my goal this year.
They will be on their devices enough through the day during their classes. A 30-minute break from electronics will help all of our students.
Our students are very diverse. 70% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. Often they go to empty homes for homes with little supervision after school. Students will spend hours on their devices after school - not usually doing homework. Many of our students do not have parents who interact with them. About 20% of our students do not have the internet at home, so they are not even interacting with their peers digitally.
Our students need to work on problem-solving skills in a fun way. We always have a group that plays tag, but the nonathletic ones are left out. The recess games I have chosen, meet the needs of all of our students. Recess games are a win-win for our students!
My Project
Our district has made the jump to 1:1 digital classroom. As teachers, we can see the benefits of this adventure. Students are using the devices to learn throughout the day.
At recess, everyone needs a break from electronics!
While our 5th graders do have a playground area, it is pretty basic. Swingset, basketball hoops. and what we refer to as the hamster wheel. While these are wonderful, they only allow about 1/3 of our students to participate. Many others are on their device or just watching.
I am hoping with this project, we will be able to engage more of our students in physical activity rather than just sitting. The items I have chosen will allow many more students to get up and participate - they might even meet a new friend!
