Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My general music students attend a middle school in the Chicago area. They excel at expressing themselves through music at this challenging and critical age when students have so much potential, creativity, and curiosity.

My students create, compose, and improvise on classroom instruments and using technology.

In my general music classes, I teach over 330 students a year. Students are in grades 6-8, and range in age from 11-15 years old. Ninety-seven percent of the student population identifies as Hispanic, and ninety-eight percent of the student population is low income. Students participate in musical activities ranging from electronic composition, performing, improvising, and composing on guitars and ukuleles, to world percussion where students learn to play music from the Caribbean and Africa. Students love to learn!

My Project

My music students must keep up with the latest advancements in the music recording industry in order for me to generate possible interest in future music careers which may include production, composing, and recording.

My students are interested in learning how to "make beats," yet my music classroom lacks enough iPads for all students to have an individual music composition station.

Students working at their own iPad will be able to use Garageband to electronically compose music using specific instrumentation, form, they can record vocals, and they can edit elements such as dynamics and tempo. This is how music producers create music and is a tool to get students engaged in music creation.
