This is the era of digital media. Students are used to video games, TV, DVDs and other media. It is very motivational when they are allowed to learn using digital media. We would like to use media to help teach positive behavior.
Our students are in an area that is increasingly impacted by the economy.
Most of our families are very hardworking families, trying to make it in difficult times. Each year we have more and more students who have families that are struggling, some have had job lost their homes after losing jobs.
We have students that have military parents, some who have recently lost parents in service to our country. This past veteran's day, some of our students put together a play they designed to honor veterans.
The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Many of the staff, even though they themselves may be struggling, spend a lot of their own money to help provide materials and motivational rewards for the students. They continually go above and beyond to help their students.
I really love and respect my staff and my students. I want to help them be successful. I would really appreciate your help.
My Project
Our students love to learn! For the students who are struggling to learn to read, we would love to have a Nook to help motivate them. It would also be a great way to reward the students who make positive behavior choices. We are committed to teaching students to make good choices. We also want to put books on it that will help inspire students. It is so rewarding when their faces light up when they are allowed to use this type of media. We have a system that students get to choose rewards when they receive a "star buck". These are given by all staff to students when they see positive behavior. Students will be able to earn time to use the Nook by trading in their starbucks.
The school staff works very well together and they share resources. This will allow us to use this Nook with all students in the school, not only this year but in the future.
We have also requested a screen protector as well as a cover to ensure that we keep the Nook in great condition.
School is about more than learning to read and write.
Although the Nook will support learning to read, it will go much further. Helping students learn the life skills that they need to interact positively with others is very important to us. These skills are very important to their success later in life. Future careers, family interactions, and how they deal with others throughout their life all need positive behavior skills.
