My students need electromagnetism kits to develop a hands-on understanding of important magnetism and electricity topics, as an alternative to a worksheet activity.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Gancarz's classroom raised $158

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
At my Title 1 school, students come from a variety of backgrounds. They frequently tell me that they enjoy science class the most, because they are exposed to seeing, feeling, and creating new things. As part of the NYS 7th grade science curriculum, we are expected to address magnetism and electricity. I always try to tie in hands-on and STEM activities with each unit that I teach, but due to the higher expenses associated with magnetism and electrical circuit kits, we have omitted a hands-on connection with this topic. My student data showed a lack of understanding with these topics in comparison to the rest of the unit and I am committed to fixing this problem during the 2017-2018 school year. Please help me make this change possible. My future students and I thank you!
My Project
Students will use these kits for several lessons during Unit 2. They will compare an electromagnet to a normal magnet (a common misconception) and see what a magnetic field looks like.
The impact of a hands on kit will extend my students' understanding of electromagnetism beyond what a worksheet can do.
Unfortunately, due to limited funding and the expense of these kits, I was unable to apply a hands on approach when teaching this topic this year. I am committed to changing this for my incoming 7th grade special education students in the 2017-2018 school year. Please help me fulfill my promise to helping students visualize science concepts and further develop their interest in the course by donating to my project!
