My students need electrical supplies they can use to build various electrical devices and experiment with circuitry in order to understand how these devices work.
Our children have been captured by electronic devices: iPods, iPads, video games, computers, and television see more face time than moms and dads. Our children can learn to become the masters of these machines, beginning with an understanding of how electrical components work.
I teach Science in a Laboratory to all grades, Pre-Kindergarten through Fifth Grade at my elementary school in Coastal Georgia.
We are an "Advanced Learning Academy" with a large population of Gifted students. We also have a large population of students who are struggling with traditional academics, and have fallen behind their grade level in reading and mathematics. As different as my students may be, most LOVE Science, and frequently tell me how much they look forward to their investigations and experiments during their Science Lab time every week.
My Project
My Second and Fifth Grade students have a curriculum that focuses on energy and electricity. The students have shown a great interest in the generation of electricity and alternative energy sources. With these snap circuit kits, the students will be able to explore geothermal, hydrogen, wind, solar, tidal, and hydro power through color-coded, easy to follow instructions that result in real, working products. Many of these energy sources are available in our coastal area, and may provide job opportunities for these students in the near future. The other electrical kits will allow them to experiment with parallel and series circuits, the generation of electricity, and construction of simple electronic devices, such as AM/FM radios, fans, lights and even burglar alarms!
Understanding electricity and electronic devices puts control of these machines into the hands of students, who may otherwise go on mesmerized by their magic.
My goal as a teacher is to provide students with real-world understanding and skills they can use now and in their future vocations. My students will not be left behind in an increasingly electronic world.
