My students need electrical tools and components to supplement their in-class electronic kits. We are requesting extra sensors and alternative conductive materials so the circuits are unobtrusive when combined with the art pieces.
Our students are special because of the unique type of education they receive at our school. EIHS is an open-access magnet school with the Houston Independent School District with no admission requirements. Our students take courses in Engineering all four years they attend the high school, and graduate with a STEM endorsed diploma. Our school is the only in the nation with an energy-industry engineering focus, and all learning in every classroom occurs through Project Based Learning (PBL).
Through PBL, our students learn how to make, do, and think using non-traditional teaching techniques (as in, no lecture, no movies, no "sit-and-get").
By the time they graduate, our students will have worked in dozens of teams, learned how to become good team members, develop project management skills, and will have delivered over a 100 formal presentations to teachers and professionals from the Houston community. They will have also developed competencies in industry-relevant equipment, such as CAD, drafting, power tools, machine shop tools, rapid prototyping such as 3D printing, and CNC equipment like laser cutters, mills, and routers.
My Project
Students in my Digital Electronics class are working together with students in Mrs. Campbell's Art II class to create an interactive, electrified art gallery to be installed in a hallway in our new school building.
The tools and supplies requested will help our students create interactive art pieces where the circuits complement the artwork such that the piece is not complete without either the art or the circuitry.
The RGB LED strips will be used to create dazzling light displays that can move and change color. The conductive tape and thread will serve as alternatives to wire, so that the circuits can be installed as unobtrusively as possible. The pressure sensors can be placed behind sections of a painting or drawing, so that when a person touches the artwork in a specific location, the art can react in some way to that touch. The Elgoo Arduino microcontrollers will be the "brains" of the circuitry. The purchase of additional microcontrollers means that the artwork can be permanently displayed instead of needing to be removed and reused for class.
We are also requesting some additional electrical prototyping tools, such as wire strippers, cutters, crimpers, and a new soldering iron. After this project is completed, these tools will be added to our engineering lab on campus for use by all other students for their future projects.
