Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

For the past six years I have taught art in an urban school system, the past four years at the high school level teaching the ceramics program to students in grades 9-12. All of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch and we are at the poverty level. I am fixing up the studio and need to replace old and damaged equipment. My students are great artists and we need to offer them more. Success is contagious.

I am very impressed by the art created by my students. I have thirty students in my classes and only two electric wheels that work well. All of the students should have the opportunity to get onto the wheels and master their throwing skills. All my equipment is old and there is no financing though the city to replace the damaged and broken equipment.

Having more wheels would benefit my students because it offer them the opportunity to learn a skill that will help them with concentration, problem solving, creativity, and expose them to a skill that is found in cultures around the world. They want to learn how to throw on the wheel and are excited by the opportunity.

The donation of this wheel will help more students have the experience of creating thrown pots. They need positive learning experiences to encourage them to keep learning.
