My Students

My students are from diverse backgrounds and boroughs within New York City. A lot of them are first and second-generation immigrants and are working towards being one of the first in their family to graduate from high school. They are looking forward to being as independent as possible after high school.

They really miss being in school with their friends.

In school, they absolutely love interacting with their peers. They also enjoy hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside of the box. However, some of my students struggle to keep up with reading and writing on grade level. This barrier causes some students to withdraw from actively participating in class. In my classroom, they feel comfortable and know that it is a safe space to take risks, make mistakes, and ask questions; which, as a result, will allow them to grow academically.

Most of my students are looking forward to moving out of their parents' home, working, and being involved in their community when they finish school. Others are looking to continue their education in a college or vocational/trade training program.

My Project

The materials that I am requesting for my project will support my students with IEP’s. It will allow them to access the same curriculum as their grade-level peers. I will be able to purchase graphic organizers, and highlighters, which will provide necessary scaffolds for my students. My students will benefit from the use of graphic organizers to assist in chunking information. During class these materials will help my students stay engaged during the lesson, and when they are remotely accessing the materials, they will help guide them and stay on track. These supports will create another access point to the materials.

This year my students will be engaged in blended learning, alternating in the classroom and remotely at home.

These graphic organizers will be used both in the classroom, and for remote learning. By utilizing digital content, I will be able to supply my students in the classroom with daily materials, as well as incorporate them into the remote component. On the days that my students are remote I will be able to provide these materials to the remote teacher, to help support comprehension and engagement from home. They will be able to engage in daily lessons in a fun way, without holding them back. As a result it will help close the gap in their reading and writing levels.
