Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the fun you had playing games, not realizing you were actually learning something? Many of my students have never truly had that opportunity before, but they've also never had me as a teacher before.

My students are 7th graders who still enjoy learning.

They enjoy having fun, too. My goal is to combine the two and introduce them to a world of words and games that will appeal to even the most reluctant of readers. My students attend a Title 1 school. Unfairly, our students are sometimes looked down upon because of the neighborhood they live in, and the socioeconomic status of many of our families, but I couldn't imagine teaching anywhere else.

My Project

I would love to provide an English Language Arts Enrichment Center for my students. I am asking for word and logic games such as Scrabble, Quad Doku, Scrabble Upwords, Words of the Wise, and Word Teasers. These games will be used in guided, as well as independent, learning centers. I know that my students will thrive on the challenge of figuring out their own strategies and logic. We are implementing Common Core this year, which raises the level of expectations for my students. Our district has also had to cut funding for our gifted students and is asking classroom teachers to meet their needs as well. Many of my students have never experienced game play that is also educational. I truly believe that this Enrichment Center will provide a center that will be challenging, and yet show them the value of thinking, brainstorming, and cooperative learning.

I would love nothing more than to be able to go out and purchase these items for my classroom, but I just cannot afford to do so.

Donations to this project will allow me to challenge all of my students, regardless of their academic level. They will be able to experience academic learning in a way that many of them have never experienced before. Finally, they will be able to develop the crucial skills of teamwork and problem solving, making them more successful students overall.
