This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our students attend a magnet elementary public school with a diverse socio-economic population in northwest Louisiana. We are a certified Leader in Me school, and are proud to be raising the next generation of capable and empathetic student leaders who strive for academic excellence!

Eden Gardens Magnet students look forward to participating in the Louisiana Young Readers' Choice Award (LYRC) program which encourages 3rd-5th graders to read a variety of quality fiction, non-fiction, and poetry books for pleasure.

The purpose of the program is to foster a love of reading in the children of Louisiana by motivating them to participate in the recognition of outstanding books. The State Library of Louisiana sponsors the LYRC program and chooses 15 high-interest books for students to read each year. Our school library must raise the funds needed to purchase these books so our students can participate in voting for their favorite title!

EGM has an incredibly positive and strong reading culture, however I only receive about $3.50 per student to purchase books every year and the average cost of just one new LYRC title is typically between $8-20. Your donation will make a difference in the lives of my voracious readers and help me get books from the 2025-2026 LYRC reading list into their hands as quickly as possible.
