Science is one of the subjects that peak a student's interest as early as elementary school, motivating them to explore the various disciplines in this vast subject area.
Most elementary schools no longer have the time or materials to foster this early interest in science, using text books instead of hands-on investigations for lessons because there isn't funding.
The egg incubator and supplies will allow students to experience the life cycle of a living thing instead of reading about it in a book. The students will have the opportunity to watch the embryo develop inside the egg.
Every student has come to look forward to spring in 3rd grade at our school. Not because it means they are close to summer vacation, but because it's egg incubation time! Our current incubators are no longer working properly and we need to replace them to guarantee a good hatch this spring. The new incubators will increase our hatch percentage (last year, only 30% of our eggs hatched) and provide better viewing for the students.
Our whole school gets excited for hatching! I set up a webcam during hatching, so every classroom can watch, and later set it up in the brooder box so students in every class can watch the chicks after hatching. Classrooms come to visit and my students are like proud parents, telling others what they have learned and watching the hatchlings grow.
My students watch the growth of the embryo, track and chart the growth of the air sac, and learn how fragile life can be for these animals.
The chicks that hatch almost act as therapy animals for my students when they are having a bad day. It is incredible to see the bond between the students and animals.
