"This was no time to play. This was no time for fun. This was no time for games. There was work to be done." ~ Dr. Seuss
By infusing a variety of ways to learn, it can be fun in my classroom. With these requested resources, I will be empowering students through art.
My Emotional Needs students exhibit extreme behaviors and have various abilities, and I strive to build their confidence in what they can do, not emphasize what they can't do.
Their Special Educational disabilities include autism, ADD, ADHD to name a few. The children come to school eager to learn. I teach in a large, diverse Title I kindergarten-eighth grade school in a high poverty, high crime area in Philadelphia. 100% of the children are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. They are from various living situations, such as single parents, foster homes, shelters, or extended family living. Some can racially identify in more than 1 category. Most don't have resources at home to practice skills taught in school.
My Project
My emotional needs students are easily distracted from their work. With your donation to this project, the resources I have requested will give my students varied materials to choose from to develop fine motor skills. Research shows that when a child chooses what to work with, they will be more engaged with it and learn better. I have requested the LEGO Storytale kit so that they can learn about story elements, such as characters and setting and then write about and illustrate their creation. The LEGO Playground set will provide role playing opportunities to learn how to play in a larger group with real children. The Math Train and Tubes kits will help learn math & science by exploring. Don't these LEGO sets look fun? Well, they will help develop fine motor skills, as well as social skills, while learning to write about their experiences. They will draw math problems from their creations, as well. We will showcase our creations in the lobby art cabinet.
By infusing more hands-on activity into their day, these exciting resources will reignite my students' dwindling motivation.
It will differentiate learning and appeal to a variety of learning styles. It will tremendously impact my current and future students. During the school days, I help to provide them with food, water, and safety. Won't you help them get their next most needed resources? 2, 4, 6, 8: we want to learn with hands-on materials and cannot wait! "There is work to be done." ~Dr. Seuss
