Egg Drop Challenge

Help me give my students the supplies that they need to build a Pod that will protect an egg using all the steps in the design cycle.

My Project

I have a great idea for an egg drop challenge project! How about designing a parachute system for the egg? This will require some creativity and problem-solving skills, which are perfect for eighth graders. Here's how you can approach it:

We will start by researching different types of parachutes and their designs and look into how they work and what factors affect their performance.

Once we have a good understanding of parachutes, we will brainstorm different ideas for your egg drop device. Consider materials, size, and shape. Sketch out a few designs to visualize your ideas.

Students will choose lightweight and sturdy materials for your parachute. Consider using materials like plastic bags, lightweight fabrics, or even coffee filters.

We will build a small-scale prototype of your parachute design. We will test it by dropping it from different heights and see how well it slows down the fall.

Based on our initial tests, we will make necessary adjustments to your design. We will experiment with different parachute sizes, shapes, and materials to find the best combination.

Once we have a successful prototype, create a final design for your egg drop challenge. Make sure it's easy to attach and detach the egg from the parachute system.

Test your final design by dropping it from different heights, starting with lower heights and gradually increasing. Record your results and analyze the data to see how well your parachute system protects the egg.

We will prepare a presentation to showcase our design process, challenges faced, and the final results. Explain the scientific principles behind your parachute system and how it protects the egg during the drop.
