This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come to school every day with a smile on their faces and genuine excitement for the day ahead. However, many come hungry; our entire student body receives free breakfast and lunch. Many come tired; a home or even a bed of their own is a luxury several students don't have. Others come knowing little or no English but communicate beautifully through their smiles and kind hearts.
The families of my students have entrusted me with the education and safety of their children, and I take this honor extremely seriously.
Daily I strive to instill a love of learning in my students and believe the best way to do so is to provide lessons and activities that allow them to become active learners.
My Project
Summer is full of learning and excitement in my class! I will be teaching at the Summer Program at my elementary school for the month of July. Over the course of a week I will work with 60 first and second graders on their math, reading and writing skills.
I want to use the natural curiosity my students have about animals and center the summer academic curriculum around that.
As students who live in an inner city with little opportunity or resources to visit a farm, I want to bring the farm to them. Our program runs for 4 weeks which is the perfect length of time to hatch chicks! With an incubator in the classroom the students will have the opportunity to learn about the life cycle of chickens and experience first hand the hatching of chicks.
I have contacted a feed and grain store who will sell me fertilized eggs and will take back the chicks when our Summer Program ends. I have hatched chicks in other programs and be assured that the chicks will be handled humanly and with great care.
