Teacher Professional Development:I need an Apple MacBook Pro to improve my teaching practices and therefore, improve my students' learning.<profdevpilot>
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Growing up in an inner city infested with crime, drugs, poverty, homelessness, and gangs is a fact of life for my students. Their parent's financial resources can only provide for food, shelter, and the basic necessities of life. Technology in the home is a luxury that they cannot afford.
My teaching career began at the same inner city school that I am currently teaching at.
This school is located in an area with a great need for dedicated teachers. I have taught in the primary grades, including Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade. Over the last five years, my heart and instruction has been devoted to kindergarteners. After 17 years of watching the educational tides change, I have realized that I must continue to change right along with them. I understand the need to implement effective teaching practices that will improve my students' learning. I feel an urgency to prepare my students with the skills needed to succeed in this 21st Century.
My Project
Because I am requesting an Apple MacBook Pro, I desire to improve my instruction and therefore, improve my students' learning. I plan to accomplish this by implementing successful digital teaching practices and instructional technology programs. One of these programs is The National Geographic Education Portal, which offers free multimedia geography, science, and social studies content. Another tool I plan to use is Newseum Digital Classroom, a free, cross-disciplinary resource featuring interactive timelines, archival videos and downloadable historic front pages. PBS Learning Media is another source I plan to use. It provides access to thousands of classroom-ready, curriculum-targeted digital resources, videos and interactives. If I desire to improve learning in my students, I must combine effective teaching with effective technology.
My class and I are at a disadvantage when it comes to possessing updated effective technology.
Fortunately, this can all change with the incorporation of an Apple MacBook Pro. This laptop would provide access to multimedia knowledge, as well as interactive lessons. The MacBook Pro would foster collaboration, creative and critical thinking skills crucial in this 21st Century. Motivation and attendance levels would also increase. My students and I would be greatly enriched by this technology.
