My Students

My students are 5th graders and all working so hard to continue to learn concepts in all subject including English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Math. The students in my class are 9 and 10 years old and include students with Individualized Education Programs and/or are English Language Learners. Most live and go to school in a diverse neighborhood that has been hard hit with Covid-19. The majority of my students come from low income immigrant families struggling for a better life for themselves and their children. Thankfully many students who did not have access to a computer have received iPads and Chromebooks to borrow so they can engage in distance learning.

Students need to continue learning not only for academic reasons but for emotional health.

Even with all that my students have to deal with at home, they had been logging on to Google classroom every day to engage in remote learning. Now that schools are closed, I believe it is more important than ever to stay connected and to continue the learning process. Learning new concepts is the best mental health practice one can do.

My Project

Distance learning is not easy. I have used many different programs and met with my students on video chat platforms but still, explicit instruction is a challenge. Using a touch screen Chromebook with a stylus can help me to teach from home similarly to the way I might teach a new concept in the classroom. For example, I recently taught conversions of measurement of U.S. customary units and metric units such as converting yards to miles and meters to millimeters. To date I have utilized many video tutorials and practice websites to help students understand these new ideas. However, it cannot replace the explicit instruction that I was able to give in the classroom. Using a touchscreen with stylus would help me to differentiate instructions for my student population and offer them a better and more meaningful experience during this remote learning period.

Catching up on this lost time will be difficult but I hope to make it easier for my students.

As I often tell them, each year builds on the previous year's work. Offering students the chance to continue learning is good for everyone. It’s good for next year’s teachers, it’s good for individual schools, it’s good for school districts but most importantly it’s good for students.
