My Students

When students come to the computer lab in kindergarten they have a hard time using a mouse. They get confused about "left click" and "right click." If the mouse has a scroll ball in the middle they do not know how to use it, either. Children with special needs at our school also have this problem!

We have close to five hundred students attending our school.

We are a Title I school with little funding and our budget is lower and lower every year. We house all of the elementary special needs students in our county. We have close to seventy-five kindergarten students. We do not have the funds needed to serve these children properly in our technology lab. They get to visit the technology lab every week, but they are often frustrated when they are not able to use the computer mouse. Several of them do have experience with touch screen tablets and computers, but we do not have a technology lab with those items available to the students.

My Project

I am requesting one-button computer mice for the technology lab for the students that struggle with using a regular mouse. The students that struggle the most are our kindergarten students who have never been exposed to a desktop computer before, our students with special needs, and our students who have physical disabilities and low fine motor skills. When these students come to the technology lab every week they are often frustrated with "clicking" on items on the screen. They have a hard time distinguishing between the "left click" and the "right click," and the scrolling ball in the middle. The type of mouse that is sold by Amazon is the exact mouse we need for these students to be successful in the technology lab. Until these students have had lots of exposure to desktop computers and lots of time to develop their fine motor skills, they need to have these adaptive devices.

There is only one staff member that runs the technology lab.

The technology assistant is unable to help each kindergarten and special needs student when it comes to learning how to use the mouse properly. There is just not enough help and not enough time to work with each individual student. These mice will be WONDERFUL to have in our lab. The students will be more successful in doing their typing and other technology lessons! Thank you so much for your consideration!
