Educational Economy

My students need an assortment of treasures for our classroom store. Items such as sticky hands, scented erasers, fancy pencils, stress balls, key chains, cars, mini-figures and more!

My Students

My students are bursting with energy and have a strong desire to grow and learn.

The majority of my students are Native American and due to the low socioeconomic area we live in, 100 percent of my students receive free breakfast and lunch at school.

I am aware of the challenges many of my students face and I make sure that when they walk through my classroom door, they are all given an equal opportunity to learn in a positive, encouraging environment.

My Project

Q: How is the moon like a dollar? A: They both have 4 quarters.

Quarters continuously come up in third grade math.

Whether it be in rounding, place value, skip counting, money, or fractions, we are surrounded by quarters. The problem is my third graders continuously struggle with the idea especially when it comes to money or parts of a whole.

Trying to reach my students and give them hands on opportunities to learn, lead me to create a classroom economy. Getting money in my students hands on a daily basis was the best way to meet them. One of the biggest benefits I have seen is my students is the growth in their ability to skip count by 25's, 10's, 5's as well as counting on.

Besides making huge gains in math while implementing our economy, my students are also learning financial responsibilities like how to save and spend responsibly.

The treasures requested will be used in our classroom store. Students will be able to earn and money to purchase things such as sticky hands, scented erasers, color changing pencils, key chains, silly putty, stress balls, mechanical pencils, and glittery notepads. They'll continue to practice skip counting as they keep track of the money they earn and they'll figure out how to make change when they are shopping. All the while I want to encourage them to make the connections that there 4 quarters in a dollar, 75 cents is 3/4 of a dollar, quarters also refer to time, moon cycles... and on!
