This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am requesting a Pocketalk translator. The high school I work at is a newcomer center. That means that our school has a special curriculum and staff designed to support students in their first year living in the United States. I have taught students from a number of countries, Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Venezuela, Kenya, the Philippines, Syria, Afghanistan to name a few; and a variety of backgrounds, but they all face the challenge of learning the American school system. This can be especially daunting and frustrating in the first several months.
The Pocketalk can ease this burden by allowing the students and I to communicate in the student's home language.
I have experience issues using online apps especially with some of the less common languages such as Urdu, or Pashto. The pocketalk would allow me to clearly explain schedules, and schedules, changes, graduation requirements, and special events and programs that students may miss out on because they haven't yet acquired the English listening/reading comprehension skills to be aware of them. Perhaps most importantly, the Pocketalk would make communication between myself the the students' families much easier.
