Education Through the Arts

My students need xylophones, metallaphones and glockenspiels to help build our fine arts program into a performance opportunity for varying levels of music learners.

My Students

Every semester students are provided performance opportunities twice: Honors Day and Productions. Whether through song, dance or acting, our students are provided opportunities to utilize their talents in varying ways. We would love more music resources to expand our well-rounded education.

Our students attend a Title I school in Metro Atlanta.

They are outgoing and enthusiastic about learning when challenged to think outside the box. They frequently ask about various music instruments that are not present in the school. However the lack of certain resources does not hinder them from wanting to learn about them. They create their own songs and choreography not only when they come to music class but in their free time as well. I can remember numerous times that students come to me asking to perform something they wrote for the class. They support and encourage each other unlike any other students I've met at other schools. They have a unique excitement for performing for their peers. Many students are shy at the elementary stage. Also many ridicule each other at that stage. But not my students. When I noticed it I made it my mission to give them every performance opportunity I can give them to make these years as memorable for them as possible....

My Project

I want to use these resources in the general music classroom. We study basic note reading but have limited instruments that force them to utilize those skills. Also different students have varying music interests and skills. The more music opportunities provided the greater the likelihood of finding some area of music that each student can care about. The future percussionist may not really enjoy singing. I don't want any student turned away from music because they didn't find their hidden talent due to lack of resources. Currently I have a chorus that I would love to include instrumental soloists to. In addition to chorus, I want to start an instrumental ensemble as enrichment for my students who are high achievers in the music classroom. Moreover, I want to vary the types of performers in our production to enhance the quality of our programs for the parents. I believe programs are to be meaningful for the parents to demonstrate the full potential of their children.

Donations to this project will assist my students in becoming well rounded and focused learners.

It will provide them with more kinesthetic learning opportunities. My students love to be hands on. Any instruments I teach them about ignite questions such as "Can we get those instruments?" "Why don't we have those instruments?" I want my students to have the kind of resources that provide challenging, enriched opportunities that mirror those of students who compete not only locally but globally.
